Quirks & Care of Sterling Silver: Understanding, Preventing & Fixing Oxidation

For centuries, Sterling Silver has been valued for its lustrous beauty and versatility, used in jewelry, home décor, and fine dining utensils. Our Solid 925 Sterling Silver jewelry is meant to be more than just an accessory… it’s meant to be lived in, loved, and worn every day. But just like anything natural and real, sterling silver has its quirks. Occasionally, it may darken or tarnish.

If you’ve noticed your silver darkening or tarnishing unexpectedly, don’t worry!!! It’s not a defect. In fact, this is a rare but natural reaction that actually confirms your piece is real sterling silver. Let’s break it down.

The Science Behind Silver Oxidation

Sterling silver (925) is an alloy of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals (typically copper) to enhance its durability. Over time, silver can react with sulfur or chemicals in the environment, leading to tarnishing. This is normal and usually happens gradually. However, in very rare cases, silver can darken more rapidly due to specific conditions, such as:

  • Skin pH Levels – In some cases, individuals with naturally lower pH skin may notice that their jewelry wears into a darker patina than others.

  • Chemical Exposure - Unbalanced chemicals in hot tubs, pools, or hot springs can trigger a sudden and visible reaction.

  • High Sulfur Environments - Certain lotions, beauty products, perfumes, or even air quality in some cities, when interacting with individual body chemistry, can accelerate tarnishing, resulting in what we call a “perfect storm.”

A Rare Case: One Wrist, Two Silver Bracelets, Different Reactions

To highlight how rare and unpredictable oxidation can be, we had a client who wore two sterling silver bracelets - one on each wrist - into a hot tub. When she got out, she was shocked to see that only one of them had turned dark while the other remained untouched.

Same silver. Same water. Same person. Different reaction.

This rare occurrence perfectly illustrates that oxidation isn’t always consistent or predictable. It depends on environmental and body chemistry factors, which vary from person to person.

How to Prevent & Clean Tarnished Silver

If you love your silver jewelry as much as we do, here’s how to keep it looking pristine:

For Everyday Wear:

  • Rinse with clean water after exposure to chemicals. If you’ve been in a pool, hot tub, or hot spring, rinse your bracelet with fresh water immediately after. This helps remove any lingering chemicals that might speed up oxidation.

  • Pat dry after showers or workouts. Sweat and moisture can contribute to tarnishing, so after exercising or showering, simply dry your bracelet with a soft cloth.

  • Be mindful of skincare products. Some lotions, perfumes, and self-tanners contain sulfur or acids that can darken silver.

  • Wear it often! Which is easy enough if it’s permanent! Believe it or not, your natural skin oils help keep silver from oxidizing. Regular wear actually slows down tarnishing compared to silver that sits in storage.

Cleaning Your Silver:

If your piece does tarnish, it’s an easy fix!

  • Use our special silver cream! A gentle polish will restore the shine in seconds. It is perfectly safe to use while still on your wrist.

  • Buff with a polishing cloth. Regular maintenance keeps oxidation at bay, while not necessary in most cases if worn permanently.

  • Mix baking soda & hot water then apply, gently scrub with a soft bristle toothbrush, rinse, and dry. The water does need to be boiling hot for best results, so this is not the safest or preferred method if you wear your silver permanently.

  • Toothpaste and a soft bristle toothbrush followed by an eraser can help effectively remove surface oxidation from sterling silver.

If none of these solutions work, don’t stress…we are standing by and here to help to ensure you're happy with your piece.
